Drowning the light, Varw, Moon, Abyysmal Sorrow, are also great. Just found Atra vertosis, and Astral winter, as well as Hammerstorm, all from the same group of individuals it seams, and all sound different from one project to another. Tired of Midnight Odyssey, Aquilius, but will never tire of Elysian blaze: Blood geometry, totally agree it's a masterwork. Moonlabyrinth is more international, US and Au, but good, just like Strigoii, and Varcolaci, both great releases, Thrall is alright, Striiborg is just Striiborg, and was recently introduced to Midnnight betrothed, Didn't like it much. Nazxul great stuff.Ardere have a really nice demo.

There has to be dissonance. Any melody has to be unpredictable (I think melodeath is the hardest genre to do well). It needs to sound new, different, and as dark as possible.

Dawn of the Black Hearts....just kidding, lol. Dusk and Her Embrace and Cruelty and the Beast by Cradle of Filth are cover arts that I think are pretty iconic and evocative of the sounds we hear in the albuns.

Metal is so varied it’s hard to pick one thing. I like atmosphere as well as fast as fuck double bass. But mostly I like the effect the music has on me. Hairs on your arm standing up, the rush of adrenaline, and the feeling that you want to bang your head.

I've fallen lovingly back down the Black Metal hole (after 13 years of child rearing, life etc etc), basically can't stand most Nu Metal- Puddle of Mudd, Korn all that rubbish, Ghost (WTF are they), Six Feet Under, all the faux punk stuff Green day, Sum 41, My Chemical Romance, Offspring, Fall Out Boy that lot, Paramore, Linkin Park, Deftones, Lambrini Girls.... not all metal I know but they all tend to be lumped into that category...

Good call on the Dissection being the best, my favorite is Blizzard Beasts by Immortal, the album that got me INTO Black Metal. It's just the band, but not in fake poses, it's blurry, like they're standing IN the Blizzard. I also like My Arms Your Hease's cover, not stictly Black Metal I know but...I was also surprised that there was no Emperor on your list. Cheers!

For me, it's uniqueness. Music that's well-crafted but standard might sound good to me, but in order to transcend into something great, it must have something that sets it apart from anything that has come before. I recently got really into The Ruins of Beverast after listening to Rain Upon the Impure, an album which has such complex melodies buried beneath the wall of sound, barely audible but crucial for the whole structure of the songs, that it was an almost hallucinatory experience. Emotional resonance is also an important factor. I need to feel like the music means something, like it wants me to feel something. That's why Dream Theater's recent output doesn't do much for me, because while it does have a unique sound and it's expertly crafted, there's often nothing the music conveys beyond itself. It's also why Devin Townsend is my favorite artist, because he's not only one-of-a-kind when it comes to uniqueness and talent, but he's also mainly concerned with conveying his emotions through his music. I'm not gonna remember what scale Petrucci used in The Alien, but I am gonna remember Devin's agonizing screams in Deadhead.

I really,really admire when artists incorporate other instruments than the usual guitar, bass, drums combo. Gimme some trumpets, gimme a saxophone, surprise me! An example of that could be Поклик Карпат by Severoth from "when the night falls" album.
